UPSC Exam Pattern

There are three phases to the UPSC Civil Services exam: the preliminary, mains, and personal interview. To become an IAS officer, one must pass each level, as each has a distinct pattern.

Stage 1: – Preliminary Exam

The Preliminary Exam is the first of the UPSC exam's three levels. It consists of two 200-mark papers with multiple-choice, objective-type questions. During the two hours that are allocated for each exam, candidates are required to attempt it. To pass the cut-off, candidates must receive qualifying marks. The exam takes two hours to complete. The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination's Paper-2 (CSAT) is a qualifying exam with a minimum qualifying mark of 33%. There are two 200-mark papers in the preliminary exam. Both Hindi and English will be used in the question papers.

Stage 2: – Mains Exam

Those who pass the preliminary exam get an invitation to the main exam. There are two components to the UPSC mains exam: qualifying papers and merit exams. The Mains exam consists of nine papers in total. Each paper lasts three hours, plus an additional thirty minutes for students who are blind.

The other papers are for 250 points each, whereas Papers A and B are worth 300 points each.

The Mains exam consists of subjective questions that can be written in Hindi or English.

Stage 3: – Personality Test/ Interview: –

The final and most important part of the UPSC Exam is the Personality test. Those who pass the main exam will be invited to an interview based on their score. The personality test has a maximum score of 275.

This phase evaluates the social and psychological traits of the applicant. Qualities like mental acuity, concentration, rational and clear work, balanced interest, social initiative, and moral honesty are assessed in the candidates.

To assess the applicant's ability to make decisions, a few scenarios will be shown to them. The board uses the candidate's talents and abilities to determine whether or not they are a good fit for the Civil Services.
